about

‘Postcards from Pernambuco’ is the debut release from Manchester-based percussion and dance collective Juba do Leão. As a journey through the rhythms of North-east Brazil, the album boasts an eclectic mix of Maracatu, Côco, Caboclinho, Samba Reggae and much more. Rich rootsy drumming, melody and even dance are shared through ‘Postcards from Pernambuco’. Juba do Leão’s interpretations stem from first hand experience of some of the music of the Pernambuco and Bahia regions. Live field recordings from the Recife streets offer a snapshot of the beats and voices of Brazil, acting as sonic memories which weave in and out of the album.

‘Postcards from Pernambuco’ shines a light into the enticing bottomless depths of Brazilian folkloric music whilst reaching into the contemporary treasure chest of uplifting modern western styles.
